Hi guys,
I'm moving to Melbourne at the end of this month and would like to know about boating regulations as I'm going to be shipping all our belongings in about 4 months time and I was looking at buying a little 3.2-3.8m Inflatable with a 15hp motor on the back.

In SA we don't need a skippers ticket for a boat with a 15hp or less... The idea would be to use it for a spearfishing/fishing platform.... Any advice? What would a second hand setup like that cost that side?

Other advantage of this setup is that you could almost launch anywhere and the boat fits into the back of your car...

You need a boat license here.
When you get here send me a message and have a squiz at mine. I'll be selling it in a couple of months.

I recently bought a second hand 3.8m inflatable for ~$800 and a second hand 25hp in reasonable condition for ~$1000.

They are a great diving platform. So stable you can have three people sitting on one edge and barely cause it to lean. Also able to safely take on a bit more water than a regular boat so good for getting through surf, not that I'd recommend pushing it..

You'll need a licence but the test is pretty cruisey. Can get the vic boating regulations from vic roads website or a hard copy for free from any vicroads office.

Launching from most beaches is generally possible (weather/swell dependant) but they are pretty heavy to carry and take a while to set up so maybe not as convenient as you hope.

If you're more motivated that me I'm sure you'll have no dramas

Actually looking at getting a thundercat to spearfish from as it has more deck space and is a little more user friendly...

Rules have changed. Anything motorized u have to have a boat license. Like others have stated vic licensing regulations is pretty easy to pass atm. U can do it at vic roads or go to local clubs that hold coast guard nights group testing (easiest option)....
