Pretty keen to get a spear or two into some nice sized silvers!
I wanted to know what kind of bottom they usually prefer, good tactics to hunt them, signs that they are around etc.

Spend time in the water. Practice everything and you will see and get them soon enough.
It's very rare that I go out targeting a particular species normally it's just whatever comes along. The exception to that would be things like flatties and squid.
