Hi All,

Refer to the following link for the updated AUF National Spearfishing Records.
This is a good reference for those that think their catch may include a record fish and would like to submit a record fish.

National AUF Spearfishing Records

Well done to Carly for holding 9 Women's records!
Marcus has the Juniors record for an Orange-spotted Sea Perch.
Watto still holds onto the record for the Common Gurnard Perch.
Brett holds the record for Southern Bluespotted Flathead.
Leigh has the record for Southern Bluefin Tuna (139.4kg) and Albacore.

Surprisingly, Bobbie Evans doesn't have the open record for Dusky Morwong. The current national record is a whopping 13.607kg!

There are still a lot of Women's and Junior's records that have not been taken so remember, your next fish may be a record!

I thought Kev took that record with his big Southern Blue Spot? How heavy was Kev's?

Kevs 3.62kg flathead actually turned out to be a Rock flathead (got it checked by Senior curator ichthyology of Vic museum) and unfortunately paper work was never submitted within 12mths for National record. Did ask Kev plenty of times to submit and offered to help, but no cigar...

Kevs was a southern blue spot or yank flathead. I bet both my balls.

I'm with you and was certainly surprised and confused especially with tail pattern as I thought rock had spots all over. Just makes you wonder on every other fish that we've seen who's right or wrong. Anyway in the end we went with the following response although not conclusive.

This was Martin Gomon response

Hi Geoff,

Difficult call. Tail colouration looks much more like that of Platycephalus laevigatus. Head length is very tough to judge but could be upper extreme for that species or lower extreme for P. speculator. Preopercular spines don’t really suit either, but still could be as they can be variable, especially at such an extreme size. Very big for P. laevigatus but I would tend toward that species. Having said that, I haven’t looked at a lot of large fish as others have and still are working on the flatheads.

I know, not very satisfying answer but the best I can do.

Best wishes,

Martin

There's your unofficial Australian record southern blue spot or yank flathead. What a beast. Thanks for finding the pics.
