After much deliberation, the Competition Committee has updated the competition scoresheet. This 7 member committee consists of the club president, 2 deputies, comp convenor, records officer, newsletter editor, and one of the founding members of the Southern Freedivers. Amongst us are the current state title holder, club champ, A,B,C grade and Veteren champ, a multiple national and state title holder, Vic Spearfishing AUF chair, and 3 world record holders.

The new scoresheet is not much different to the previous sheet, with a new 500gm category being the biggest change.
A lot of time has gone into considering any changes and we believe this scoresheet can be used into the future without any alterations.

Looking forward to the season ahead which is scheduled to begin soon on Oct 9th!

General interest question: Do we get blue and jackass mowies around central Vic, or only on the borders with other states?

i saw a small jackass mowie in ppb last season. Came in on burley. It was a fair way into the bay too, near grassy point on the bellarine peninsula. Its the only one i've ever seen in vic.

The lads have speared some around the prom these past few years.

Hopefully it is easily modified, i can't see that the minimum sizes would not change.

Score sheet looks like it was designed by the thought bubble committee.

I reckon it was time for bigger changes than that. Who the fuck wants to shoot a 340 gram fish, a silver spot cod or even a zeb. This score sheet is still a hangover from the days when people used to throw away most of their catch after a comp. I know a few people who would dive comps if the score sheet didn't require you to shoot stuff that is inedible.

Greg you don't dive comp and you are not a member of the SFD or AUF, so your opinion means jack shit.

I gave up diving competition before you had probably even started spearing and didn't see much point in staying a member of the AUF when it did absolutely nothing for anybody other than comp spearos back then. I don't dive comps anymore, a long with a couple of the guys I used to dive comps with because of the reason stated. Maybe you should ask why so many people only dive comps for a season or two but still keep spearfishing.
Just because I'm the only one with the balls to say this openly doesn't mean that I'm the only one that thinks it.

Why don't you start a club with all your like minded friends, design your own scoresheet and dive your own comp then. Rather than just throwing your 2 cents in everytime this topic comes up..

It really pisses me off people who don't want to be part of the process but want to throw judgement after people work their arses off to come to a workable solution.

Although I don't generally take part in competitions at the last meeting I did discuss the edibility component and how it could impact on the scoresheet: I think Chris also mentioned something about conger eel, but that was dismissed as a process because it's quite subjective ... some people rave about duskies and conger eel
However, I think there would be some merit in taking fish with a generally accepted view of poor taste out of the score sheet. This could be gradually phased out by, say, decreasing the points given for that specific specie and increasing the min size til it's not worth the catch.
In any case: discussion is done openly at meetings and (Greg) if you want your say you should attend.
