How about a short explanation about the 'bad weather' for the less learned of us.

File comment: This is the kangaroo island swell buoy. What it reads for today we generally get 24/36hours later. So 4-6m today of solid ground swell in South Oz today, not a shit show in hell of the SFDs holding a safe enjoyable comp this weekend.

File comment: As you can see 5-6ft of swell running at 13-15second. Solid ground swell!

For the benefit of newbies learning how to predict conditions and the general integrity of the SFD committee instead of “Comp cancelled, go **** yourselves” how about something along the lines of “Due to the heavy south-westerly swell running all week and the predicted strong westerly winds there are very few locations on the peninsula that may have been a possibility to dive but after talking to Muzz, who has been working the abs during the week, the ground swell is massive. The comp will have to be cancelled and rescheduled to the next weekend 20th/21st. See you there!” (note: This is just an example. I have no idea if Muzz was on the abs, how big the ground swell is etc, etc.)

Is there not a whole committee of conveners? Surely one of them could give us the heads up on the conditions.

No there is a convenor (Murray) and a club committee. SFD have scrapped the comp committee this year.

Murray was on the road that day for work, Andrew is in Coffs without internet, Watto is in Tonga. So to be honest Paul there was no one close to a computer to put up the information you desired.

You do not need a partner to participate in the comps.
Most divers will dive solo but some choose to go in our pairs format.

Most of our comps last year we always had 1 or more newbies participating in their first competition. So come down dont feel threatened and most of all you have nothing to prove to us. Its all about having some fun, meeting some new people and most all diving within your limits. The last point is important. If that means sticking closer to shore due to being unfamiliar with an area. Thats fine. Trust me there will be plenty of others with ya.

As you get to know some of the members there might be a chance that you will find someone that is needing a partner for the pairs format, if you are still keen on doing that.

As for this weekend, if the comp is cancelled it will be postponed to next weekend.

Geoff

Oh ok fair enough. I just thought at the meeting they said it was all pairs. Might seem like a stupid question but if I was to compete as a solo what is the go with having a dive buddy?

You still have the discretion to choose (solo or pairs). The meeting was about promoting more pairs to compete. As we are finding more and more competitions such as nationals have a component which is pairs based. So no harm as a club /state trying to get better in this area. Mind you even for those not wanting to compete at that level, there are too many obvious plus's to list in terms of competing as a pair.

To answer your ?. If im reading it correctly.
1)When competing solo you can have a dive buddy. (You can swim around with them.)
2)Both of you must have all your own safety equipment and gear.
3)you or your buddy 'cannot' assist each other with the capture process of any fish, dispatching of fish, removing fish from spear, stringing fish, carrying their gear, hauling fish etc, etc.
4) However if they think you are a good bloke , they can assist you if you are in danger!!! Vice versa:)

Hope this helps
