I first saw this post ages ago and figured the responses may have been interesting. Does the lack of response mean folks aren't interested in the topic or are still busy thinking about it.
I personally don't dive comps anymore because I don't like to shoot what I consider to be inedible.
Then the question arises about who can judge what another person likes to eat. Personally I wouldn't eat a zeb if you paid me but Ive got a mate who loves them. I put poo on dusky eaters in the past but just discovered they are ok as tempura if only small.
Their isn't to many fish that I'd shoot at only 340 grams either . Thats tiny.

two bob from me - although I havent dived a proper comp for 25 years.
I was really surprised to see black parrots, sergeant baker and congers still on the list ; and there is a case for duskies, silver drummer and stargazers as well. ( good to see moonlighters off , from early days ! )

I would definitely support idea of dropping a few species off the list. Wrasses, zebras, leather jackets, duskys - there are all neither particular tasty (in my opinion) nor competitive. I understand for some people including me that would mean 0-2 species counted at most times but I would prefer that to shooting all those different types of poor LJs.

Maybe there should be 2 species list - one for the ocean, one for the bay?

Blue-throats and leather jackets are awesome eating, i don't know how you can say that they are not, and i know a lot of people will disagree when you say leather jackets aren't tasty!

But, you guys have to remember, those guys who only catch one species in a comp... what species would that be? a leatherjacket? a wrasse? a dusky? if you take them away, they wont weight anything in on the harsher competition conditions.

why are people who are not members of our club worried about our species list? leather jack and several other species you lot name can be fantastic eating! 25 years ago im sure gs shot the crap out of every thing that came close enough! either become a member and voice your opinion or become a greenie!

Was that directed to me? I'm a member of the club.
Even if you like the taste of those species, it's still the easiest fish to get in the ocean. What's the point of having such fish on the list if everyone gets it all the time?
But yeah, I'm just voicing out my opinion.

no not at you naus. congas would be about the only thing that should come off that list. we dont waste any fish at the end of the day and we dont shoot the crap out of these fish either. i know myself on social dives i take non of these specieses so why is it a problem to take them in our small amounts of competition days?

very harsh BM , without knowing any facts about
1. your members , or
2. the comp.scene 25 years ago , or
3.me
Maybe I can buy you a beer at the next meeting (or Shellharbour).

i cant remember the name of the competition witch use to be held in narooma but i remember as a young bloke growing up there watching them action off crap reef fish by the truck loads!and i bet that wasnt the only comp at that time where this happened.unfortunatly i want be heading up there cause of work but maybe another time gs.

These "crap" reef species, are in huge proportions in the ocean. They are not endangered, they are not rare. As the brown mullet said, most people will not shoot them out of the comp.

Would such a small amount of fish effect the population? It wouldn't.
The competitions aren't even large down here, 20 guys on a good day?
once a month? in different locations?

Almost sounds like the greenies stories whilst trying to bring in more marine parks.

why not talk about removing some of the species with three or more relatives.
Remove one or two from the mullet family, Yellow Eye mullet or Sand mullet.
Also with Lj's i wouldn’t want to see them all go but it wouldn’t hurt to remove the "LJ OTHERS" section. This will make hunting Lj's more competitive.

If we remove species then we should add, how does a section for Cray’s sound??
