The Kingfish Cup was run on the weekend with reasonable weather conditions on Saturday but no diving possible on the Sunday. Pairs of divers from the Southern Freedivers, Shipwreck Coast Skindivers and Geelong Freedivers competed from boats out of Pt Fairy, Queenscliff, Western Port and Walkerville. Kingfish proved difficult to find or tease up from the deep, but were spotted in several locations.
The winning pair was Pierre Casabene and Jason Halliwell from SFD with a 14.6kg Kingfish speared by Pierre. Jason tagged a similar sized fish that busted the flopper off and got away. As the winning pair, they each take home a full kit including wetsuit, mask, gloves and boots thanks to main sponsor
Adreno.
The minor prizewinners were Mac Riddle for the biggest crayfish at 1kg and most meritorious fish a 2.4kg bastard trumpeter to Pete Thompson.
In the raffle, Alex Zisman took out the speargun (thanks to VSC for donating that), and Alan Fitzsimons the
Divepro wetsuit (thanks to Steven for this and other prizes).
The main weigh-in was at Tooradin, and thanks to all who helped out, especially Carly and Geoff for running the BBQ and he Major sponsors
Adreno,
Divepro and
VSC.
We would also like to thank our long term sponsor
Epsealon Spearfishing Australia for their ongoing support of the club.
On a side note Saturday, some young spearos (not in the comp) got onto some smaller yellowtail kings inside Port Phillip bay.
We can expect a few pairs to dive there in KFC 2018.
