Day 1 of Western Districts was held today at Taylor’s Bay, Port Fairy. There was a great turn out of 17 competitors with some new faces amongst the old.

The swell was high which meant that most divers stuck to the lagoons, the few that ventured into the breaking waves quickly returned battered and bruised.

Most divers headed east with Watto leading with a sprint. Some great fish were seen within minutes of entering the water including a 2kg+ Snapper seen by Blacky.

Although there were many fish around, it was hard to find different species, some divers reported spending larger amounts of time looking for one big fish only to go round the corner and find heaps of the same species.

After 6 hours everyone was eager to find out what their mates had shot, everyone reported having small bags which meant it was going to be a close finish. Watto with 7 species.
Some standout fish were Wattos 1.3kg snapper and 805g whiting.

Thanks Kim A for the write up.

Day 2 of Western Districts was held at Griffith island and saw 10 divers sign on. The swell was still up around 3m with a predicted 40km/h westerly to back it up.
The competition started at 8am. The really competitive divers made a dash to the other side of the island, all trying beat their mates while still maintaining energy to dive.
Just like yesterday, the conditions made it tough to find new terrain with most divers sticking to the protected bays. Some fearless souls ventured beyond the breakers through the channels and they were met with strong currents and open water.
Visibility varied from 10m in close on the southern side of the island to 0m on the eastern side. Most divers stuck around the southern protected bays.
The weigh in was shrouded in whispers. Most divers had done better than the previous day and didn’t want to give away any secrets.
Mac with 11 and Watto with 10. Kim won the heaviest Whiting with a 900g specimen.

Don’t forget about the club meeting on Tuesday at Club Nobel, Nobel Park. All welcome.

Overall results for the competition are:

Nathan Watson-1950.40pts
Blake Riddle-1809.25pts
Kim Adair-1593.75pts

After due consideration Southern Freedivers as convenor for the 2019 state spearfishing titles and the western districts spearfishing title, in accordance with our competition rules(that both competitions were run under)
have disqualified Mr Torelli in both instances.
The matter is now closed, southern Freedivers will amend the published results to that effect.
