The Newhaven boat comp has been called ON for Saturday 20/2. Please be at the Newhaven boat ramp before 8:30 for sign on. Please bring your complete entry for plus entry fee ($15 seniors and $5 juniors). There will be a bbq and drinks at the end.
Note that it will be very busy at the ramp so it’s advised that you arrive much earlier than 8:30. We won’t be taking late sign ons.

Hi All,

We held the Newhaven Boat comp yesterday on Phillip Island.

Some arrived at the boat ramp before 7am and the carpark was already full. Most divers got to the ramp early and there were no problems in everyone getting ready before the start of the comp. Everyone cruised out from the ramp to free up the facilities and we were greeted with strong currents, with 1 boat almost getting their anchor stuck on the bottom. The start of the comp saw the boats and jetski's being able to get offshore easily and quickly, as the channel was calm (except for the boats at the back that were driving in the front runners wash). Some went left and the majority went right. Most slowed up with the chop that was created by the swell bouncing off the cape. The swell was up a bit and forecast to drop throughout the day, with some areas that were slightly calmer and had less surge. One diver had to head back into the ramp as he forgot his mask, but he didn't lose any gear off his ski for once, so that was a bonus. There were good numbers of fish around and a wide variety of species seen and taken. One diver even got schooled by Tuna, but resisted taking a shot due to having a pranger on his speargun. Most of the boats and ski's moved around to various spots throughout the day and everyone made it back by the 3pm cut-off, some only having a few minutes to spare.

The weigh in commenced and there were some good bags of fish presented. Kaylah weighed in a 450gm Rock Ling and a 815gm Flathead as part of her catch. Both fish are potential new women's state records. Well done Kaylah! Nia weighed in a rare Banded Sweep and he also got the biggest flatty of the day. Murray and Watto got some cracker ling, both going well over 2kg. 4 Black drummer were weighed in with Scott Kelly's being the biggest of them at 1740gm. 3 decent sized Whiting scored with Kim's being the biggest at 610gm. Stoj got his first Gurnard Perch, being the only A Scale Bonus fish for the day.

Some of the standout / notable fish for the day were;

Kim 610gm King George Whiting
Stoj 640gm Gurnard Perch
Kaylah 815gm Flathead, 450gm Rock Ling
Murray 2520gm Rock Ling, 1295gm Black Drummer, 1380gm Silver Drummer, 345gm Red Cod
Nathan 2950gm Rock Ling
Nia 1210gm Flathead, 485gm Banded Sweep
Scott K 1740gm Black Drummer
Tim 1520gm Snook

Well done to Murray for taking out 1st place in the comp with 18 species. Well done to all the other divers that competed too. It was a really enjoyable comp with some really tasty fish weighed in.

Thanks to everyone that helped organize the comp, run the weigh in, cook the bbq and help clean up afterwards.
The next comp scheduled is the Victorian State Spearfishing Titles. Look forward to seeing everyone there!
