just baught one of these cameras with the intent of taking it when i go out spearing. Just wondering if any folks on here have used one of this type of camera that says its waterproof to 10m without housing. I will not be taking it to the max depth ten meters very often and i have a short float roap to let me know when to stop. Does anyone know of issues that may arrise e.g. seals needing replacing every so often. or greasing of the seals? the instructions only tell you to wash it in fresh water after every use. is there any added things i can do to keep it in top shape. just looked at a housing that would cost another $380 . After forking out $500 for the camera that will have to wait perhaps another year...

I was thinking about getting a camera similar to this, but speaking to a mate that works at camera house, was pretty much told not to. There more designed to be "waterproof" and "schockproof" for you average use, not really to be taken out into the ocean. He's had a lot of people complain & try to return it after thrashing it about in the salt water. This was for a particular canon camera that I was going to get (about a year ago) so things have probably changed by now???
The best way to go is have a combination of the waterproof/shockproof camera and the housing.

i have the mju 770sw 7.1 megapixel.water proof to 10m.
have used it in the salt water to around 5m, not a thing wrong with it.drag it around for about 3hrs, still fine.

my mate has the mju725 waterproof to 3m died in the arse after 15 minutes.
managed to get 10 photos and then the camera said it had water in the battery slot.
he never took it more than 2m, first time in the salt.took it home he pulled it to bits and now it works except for the playback button.

i use mine without a housing, top camera for picture quailty, not too sure underwater still trying the settings. still managed some really nice shots with the underwater macro setting, this zooms right in ( not used when up close ).

thanks for the input guys. On further reading of the camera manual it says the seals will need replacing annually. It also says "the waterproof feature is warranted to operate at depths up to ten meters for up to one hour".
I think i'll take it easy on it untill i can afford a houseing for it. Did your mate recomend a camera that would be suitable tyson?. I'll keep you posted on how it goes anyway, post some pics too if they're good enough.

He recommended another canon camera for its quality features, but not a waterproof one. One to use with the housing.

The bottom line was that whilst you can take these camera's out and use them in the ocean & drag them around and do whatever, they will eventually fail on you. If you are planning on taking it out lots & you treasure your camera, buy the housing for it...
But i guess if you only take it out say once a month you could get away without it...
