be carefull boys and dont push to hard with the training,we have already lost one diver this year training in a pool. simple swimming laps help. lately myself and some mates have been training in a 25m pool, mostly swimming laps, but we do break it up with one bloke watching while the others swim 25 under water holding our breath then swim back and have a breather. brett and badger would be good blokes to talk to about this type of stuff. be safe

personally i dont do any pool training, so all i can suggest is to; really listen to what brown mullet has suggested here BE SAFE, WATCH YOUR MATES AND NEVER EVER EVER EVER PUSH THE LIMITS ON YOUR OWN.....EVER!....EVER!

i dont think brett does any pool work either, but im sure he'd have a similar view of watching out for your mates 100% of the time, and just working on your recovery. as ray powell stated 'spearfishing is about multiple/many dives during the day, this differs from training up for one or two big dive as a pure freediver would'. going for the greatest distance is a freediving training regime compared to a spearo who may need to hit the bottom 20, 30, 40 -60 -80 + times during the day and recover as soon as possible. different menatality and physiology.

That's paramount Badger.
That is why I encourage anyone turning up NOT to bring any weights (belt, vest, neck, etc...) as the aim is to build up general fitness in the water, respiratory and circulatory efficiency (aerobic performance) enhancing the ability to recover from dives. This should allow for more comfortable and relaxed periods in the water/dives rather than increasing the anaerobic performance for a single long dive.
The ability to comfortably and safely prolong time underwater will slowly build up in time as a byproduct of the above.
Running and cycling provide the same general aerobic improvements, and should be done regularly as basic training; however, the downfall for our specific purpose, is that they are performed outside the aquatic environment.
