indeed ... that's been the case for a while
also, I understand that as part of the restrictions in removing invertebrae from the intertidal zone one cannot use muscles, abalone, cockels, small crustaceans or other similar as burley within the interd. zone

do I interpret correctly ?

The club rules which should be released later this week (if i get the time) state what is allowed to be burleyed in club competition.

Is there a difference between club competition and what the fishing regulations will actually allow?

I don't fish the comps, so am just interested in what the fishing reg's will allow you to do -> if you collect the urchins, take 'em home, remove the roe & stick the remains in the fridge, can you use the remains as burley at a later date?

I can't imagine how yo would explain to fisheries that you had removed the roe another day and hadn't done it on that dive.

Guys I think you will find that there is a clause somewhere in the fisheries act that says 'unless for immediate use.' Funnily enough I couldn't find it in the current fishing guide, although I am sure that it was included in previous guides. Burley would certainly constitute an 'immediate use' of the urchin roe, just as it is ok to fillet fish at sea if you have an on-board bbq and are about to eat them.

I would probably check this incase it has changed or what constitutes an immediate use has changed (aka if burley or bait, or just to eat).

Fisheries officers are not idiots. They are not going to go out of their way to ping you for burleying a couple of urchins, or even abs for that matter. The law is in place to try and stop the illegal taking of commercial quantities. I shall not be in possession of shucked abs or opened urchins; because once I drop them to the bottom they are no longer in my possession. So don't panic.

my point is in comps would they turn a blind eye with 20 divers in the water with a littered bottom of those things you just mentioned.

You are not allowed to burley the above items in comps or you will be disqualified. (not arrested )

thats what I was trying to get across. I wasn't implying that you will get arrested ,burly in comps was spoken about at the meeting and a question came up about sea urchins.I thought they weren't allowed but never spoke up at the time because I wanted to check up in the fisheries book first. Thats why I posted it , I don't care what individuals do on there own when diving but at a club meet it was clearly stated at the meeting that we will play by the rules.

if the fisheries were to have a swimmer in the water,which they do from time to time. if you are caught burlying abs or sea orchins you will be fined so i dont know how you can say that brett! you have removed the ab or orchin from the sea floor so you are in possesion of that creator are you not?

Can you eat these things? I was watching the STM ep when they were eating the roe from the NZ breed, are the AU ones the same as NZ?
