Hey jman, it depends on your wetsuit size together with its thickness. More importantly, there are strict regulations that should be followed to the letter as well as clearly understood before you go abalone fishing.

Peace

Somewhere around 9 kgs with a 5mm suit would be a good place to start, maybe 7.5 kgs with a 3mm suit!

Fuck me. This is not rocket science. This has been covered a million times before. ( along with the ever popular....which fins? Which gun? Where can I go? What will it be like in 2 months time at Koonya? ) Work it out for yourself. If you can't get down then it's not enough. If you can't get up then it's too much.
Not enough is better than too much. Let common sense prevail.

No matter how many times it's been covered before, something relating to safety never deserves a response like that. Whatever weight you need, make your sure belt or vest has a quick release.

NO vest is quick release. So no vest is safe. A simple clasp on a simple webbing or rubberised belt is the basic requirement.

My opinion only, so get fucked. ( this is also my opinion only)

I hope one day I get asked a safety question about something I have a lot of experience in. So that instead of keeping my mouth shut if I have nothing good to say, I'll give some smart ass reply.
