Does anybody know how to identify a beardie over a bearded rock cod? I speared a 360gm bearded rock cod at the comp on the weekend, later thinking it couldve been a beardie. The tip of its tail was white, but I cant recall if this is on both species? My fault I didnt mention it at the weighin, anyway for next time....

There are three species of these things that all olive in this area.

This is one

And another one

And another one, but this one is only small so you wouldn't shoot it

To tell the difference between the red cod and bearded rock cod, look at where the pectoral fin joins the body. Red cod have a black spot, bearded rock cod doesn't. Also the end of the tail of the bearded rock cod is rounded, but is flat on the red cod.

so I presume a red cod is on the scoresheet as a beardie. I speared it 'side on' under a ledge, and I remember it had that blotchy pattern as seen on the red cod pic, because for a split second, I thought I was looking at a ling. I cant recall the tail shape. Do you know if the blotchy skin pattern or white tipped tail can be seen on either fish?
