The dumping of dredging waste in the Great Barrier Reef (GBR) is scheduled to take place in July.

http://www.gbrmpa.gov.au/zoning-permits ... arine-park

Quote:
Dredging and material placement (also called spoil dumping) have relatively well-known potential impacts such as degradation of water quality, changes to hydrodynamics, smothering of benthic fauna and flora, damage to marine wildlife through the dredge mechanism, translocation of species and removal of habitat. If inappropriately managed, dredging activities may impact areas of conservation value. Dredging and material placement processes need to be carefully managed to ensure any adverse effects are prevented or confined to areas of low conservation value.

They (The Government) always find a way to make money by distorting the marine environment... Is it me or is the purpose of a marine park to have natural processes and cycles un-influenced by human activity?..

The federal government contact a wide range of groups along the GBR region asking for them to provide a letter of support. If they did this then they would be able to say that they had support to their money making cause.
The greens picked up on this issue as well and raised it in parliment. Go get them 'Greens'.

Each spear club, fishing club, conservation organisation etc should submit letters against this action of dumping in a sensitive area. If folks in the south don't unite with the north then you may not have the wonderful locations to come and visit and spear into the future.
