As the end of this year is comming to a close. and i am getting a little towwy not being near the water. me and my kiwi mate are doing our shooters safty course in Derby this friday. By the time all the paper work is done i will have a gun by eirly next year.

Question

what gun should i get?

i will be shooting Roos, Pigs, Horse, Cows, Snakes, lizards and some large Birds.

gun has to
-look classic Non of this plasctic shit.
-i will scope it up. with a quality scope.
-Gun under $1000
-dont mind getting 2 guns 22 and somthing a little bit bigger(thoughts?)
(got told by the station manager a 243 is the way to go he has a 1986 winchester in amazing condition  )

I am seeing a friend from the road in melb. he is going to show me his collection of Brno 22's in November

absolute novice.

Hey oz. You should get at minimum .270 so when you come back to vic you can use it on sambar. If your main quarry is roos and pigs .308 or 7mm08 should be O.K.

Tikka T3's are good value. http://www.berettaaustralia.com.au/tikka/

+1 for the Tikka T3 and yeah I reckon .308 would be cheap to shoot with lots of different load options. Don't need to go to some massive Cal otherwise will you be paying $$$ for every pest you shoot. Synthetic stock would be great if you are using the rifle as a knock about scrub gun, but if your shooting from the car then it won't matter, go wooden heavy barrelled

there is a $10 price difference from a 22 in ammo.
im going to look at some 2nd hand roo cull guns in Vico when i get there.
hope to have a shoot with them and get some idea of what i want.
Derby Gun shop has a Small range of guns

there is a ruger 22-250 brand spanker for $1100

out of my ballpark

Holts in colac is the go! Outdoorsportman in geelong is alright if you have Patience...
.243 is a awesome round, but it wouldn't be my choice for large animals like the bulls or whatever..

Nothing wrong with brno 22's oz, learnt to shoot on one they knock possums over just fine but a bit light for some stuff you want to shoot. You'd be able to do a lot of damage with a .270 in long open country, my old man is big fan of his for long shots in the alps back home

I've never hunted here in Australia but I've done a bit back in NZ. .308 was my calibre of choice, not much walks away with one of those rounds in it. Most of our hunting was in scrub and native forest at reasonably close range and there's less chance of deflection from a twig or a bush with the larger calibres.
A .308 might be a bit heavy handed for a Kangaroo though?

I guess it comes down to what game you'll mostly be chasing and at what range. We used everything from .22, .22 magnum, .243, 7.62 x 39, 6.5 x 55, .303, .308 etc. For me .308 came out on top for pigs and deer.

Oz get a .308 you will regret it if the pig gets up and makes you 2 stones lighter.

Oz, you want 2 good all round guns?
savage 17hmr stainless with a peppers wood stock.
tikka t3 hunter stainless fluted barrel in 25-06 or 30-06.

if you want to get 3 to cover everything I would say 25-06 and a big 30 like one of the 300magnums.

All you really need in your life is a small (17hmr) med (243, 25-06, 257rob or wby) and large (30-06, 300wm, 300wsm) and a snotty lol.

Nothing in aus you can't kill. As for glass, your gun is only as good as your scope.

Spoke to Dan, going to see him in a couple of weeks.
Thanks mate. have we met surfcoast spearo?

My shooting will be close range drove up to 20 pigs and piglets yesterday comming home from a Barra fish. Tried to hand catch some piglets but they were to quick for us. Still looking for a .243 but going to drop my price range for my first gun.
Had 2 cows stuck in the quicksand on the banks of the Ftizroy River managed to free them both. They had been there for a week and the black felles had done nothing! who would have known cows can swim.!

managed to bring home one nice 70+cm barra

great friday arvo

New guy to spearfishing. But i've been shooting for about 9 years now, so here's my 2c.

Tikka. Howa. Savage.
Tikka has excellent fit and finish and is reliable and accurate.
Howa/Sav are accurate and reliable, fit and finish is a bit less though. But the howa's are much cheaper.

Calibre depends on where you're hunting.
I'd go a .308, or maybe a .270 if you're expecting ranges past 400-500m or so just due to the flatter trajectory.
If you've never shot before start small with a .22 or .17, you'll gain more experience than you could ever hope to on one of these little beauties.

Scope is JUST AS IMPORTANT AS THE RIFLE.
Bushnell and Vortex (Especially their Viper/PST lines) are good brands.
Leupold used to be good, but quality control has gone out the window and they're nowhere near as good as they used to be.

Good luck and happy hunting.
