I have found that hard drives from old computers work well (also handy as a safety mirror with a hole in the middle for reflecting the sun at searching aircraft). I didn't used to think they would stay shiny all that long in seawater, but that was a year or so ago, and the mirror finish is still fine.

Trouble is, I won't half cop it when Dad sees what I have done to his computer!! (joke)

I you can afford it definitely buy one like the pic above instead of making one! I've made several and they do work but when we're at the prom it's obvious those ones work better. I've seen fish come to flashers 60ft away and not come over to the shit ones.

Have you ever seen a couple of hard drive platters bent into a slight "s" in action Rhino. I even get the occasional squid trying to give it a hug.

No I haven't Greg, I have used polished stainless steel plates which were bent to provide spin and pieces of an old concave perspex shop mirror to top it off. Sure it worked but when the fish had the choice they always chose the professional ones!

I've seen it with my own eyes, the bought ones always outperform homemade ones. Have you used professional ones Greg?

I have seen the pictured flashers in action at the glennies at the Prom, in NZ and the coral sea and they work an absolute treat. I have seen the pictured flashers used when other ladder style flashers and other style flashers are being used and the pictured flashers have outperformed the others easily. Fish I have taken when these flashers were in use: kingfish, dogtooth, jobfish. Fish I have seen taken when these flashers were in use: kingfish, wahoo, trevally, dogtooth, spanish mack, yellowfin tuna, jobfish.

A mate of mine bought one of those ladder type ones. I think it's RA but not 100% sure. The only times I've seen it in use neither of us has had any luck. So actually , no i haven't had a proper chance to compare them in action.

Not the ladder ones, the ones with just a couple of plates, occy and a couple of big arse perspex mirrors are the ones you want!

Hi all,

Just in the process of making my own Kingy flasher and I'm having a little trouble sourcing suitable materials. Perhaps I'm getting a little too technical but looking at an underwater disco ball with a rattle inside and other reflective prisms, etc but can't seem to find anything online. I've got the usual reflective Perspex, flashing squid, etc but looking to take it to the next level. Thinking I'll have to come up with something myself but any ideas would be appreciated, particularly with regard to neutrally buoyant materials...

Cheers,

Griff
