Valdes pairs Novice comp.Perfect opportunity for some ocean experience with some of our regular divers.. Come down have a look at gear, ask questions . Comp will be held on Sunday at Cape Schank. 7.30 sign on in the carpark for an 9.00 comp start from the rocks . Finish up the top in the carpark at 1.00 . Weigh in,BBQ and presentation will be held at the Fingal picnic area following the event.
Format for the event will be that we will try and pair a novice with a more experienced diver.

Please be familiar with SFD rules especially the pairs rules. ( see attached)
Entrants must be a member of the AUF. If you need to join see the AUF website and please bring a copy of your receipt as proof of payment.
Entry for the event is $10 per diver.
Please bring a completed entry form (See attached)
Keep in mind it will be hot later as we finish so hydrate and maybe even remove your suits prior to the walk up.
I have a couple of 4 m float lines but any 4 m line will do.

Is it the same rules with a 5m and a 20m+ float line?

I was of the same opinion but hadn't heard anyone mention it.

It'll be 40 degrees on the day, those stairs won't be fun on the way back up. The hell climb!! Might be worth bringing a back pack to throw your wetsuit into for the climb up. As Andrew said, make sure you bring plenty of water. Treble what you usually take.

I agree that I would like to see it changed however there has not been any discussion. It should at least go to a meeting and as there was no Jan meeting there has been no opportunity prior to this comp. I suppose ultimately its up to those who dive pairs to discuss and decide.

If there was to be a change what should it be ? Suggestions please.

Considering it's the Schwank and there is some depth it's probably not bad for the inter pacific rules, 1 up 1 down. It's no good in the bay. I will be diving with my son and he won't be leaving my side so it doesn't bother me what way it is. I was just wondering if a decision had been made

1 diver must remain on the surface at all times in close proximity of his/her dive partner?

We would like to see plenty of those people we have spoken to at meetings and on the forum regarding beginner advice . The dive /comp does not have to be anything too serious. You can get out early, have a break mid comp. Its a perfect way to see what gear people use, how they modify their gear, and ask questions.
Dont forget that if you want to dive you must have AUF membership . http://auf.com.au/

Well the conditions at the Schank were filthy and the comp ended up running at Mt Martha. 16 Divers entered and were paired up. It was great to see a couple of young ones with Marcus diving with Paul , Fitzy diving with his son Darragh, Rob with his nephew Jeff and a couple of new guys Tim and Rolland. Unfortunately It was going to be a hot day so the beach and boat traffic was going to be bad. After many warnings about boats divers entered the water and nearly all headed for the reef to the south nearer Mt Martha. Comp ran for just a bit over 3 hours with all divers getting back safely.
4 pairs successfully weighed fish.
1) Watto and Brad 475.10 100% 4 fish
2) Trent & Kyle 442.70 93.18% 4 fish
3) Nghia & Stoj 112.70 23.72% 1 fish
4) Tom & Joseph 109.45 23.03 1 fish

We found a really nice area for an after event BBQ with the Valdes family and I am sure that they really appreciate us continuing to run this event.
Thanks to all the helpers with the BBQ , weigh in etc

Great day, Darragh will always remember Valdez as his 1st comp. We didn't weight any fish but that's probably a good thing, it can only go up from there.
Thanks to all the organisers for the day, especially Nigz who nearly sacrificed his 3rd place presentation to clean the hot plates. I don't think I've ever seen a hot plate so clean. I think you've found your forte bud.

Valdez is definitely on myself and Darragh's calender of events for next year.
