Last weekend the Southern Freedivers held their annual club trip to Saltwater Creek. The forecast didn’t look too promising for diving but upon arrival we were greeted with fantastic conditions off Green Cape. Great visibility and a variety of fish life made for a perfect first days diving. Species such as black drummer, blue morwong and trumpeter were the desirable species taken, but no sight of kingies. Fortunately we were greeted by a whale only 50m from the rocks just before we jumped in. After a big day of diving, we set off to setup camp at Saltwater Creek and enjoy the rest of the sunny day with cold beers in hand discussing the days diving.

Day two had variable conditions, with a decrease in visibility and an increase in jellyfish population. Half of the crew called it early and ventured back to camp for an early lunch. Some people decided to have a leisurely dive in Merimbula to see if a few flatheads could be picked up. Some were taken and many more were spooked but an overall interesting dive. Even tho it was raining an somewhat chilly outside the water was warm with minimal current. New comer Glen scored himself a nice estuary catfish.

Day three didn’t go our way in terms of diving conditions with the swell picking up and the visibility varying so we headed to the surf. Brett’s stand up paddle board was a hit attracting some not so adventurous onlookers.

Overall, a fantastic trip with 9 SFD members enjoying the weekend diving, telling stories and enjoying each other’s company. Looking forward to next year in the hopes the conditions may be slightly better, and more divers in attendance.
