The Sorrento boat comp has been called ON for SATURDAY!!!! Sign on/off will be at the boat ramp and closes at 8:30 for a 9am start finishing at 3. Please bring your completed entry forms and $15 for sign on. It may be quite busy so consider arrive earlier to allow time for launching.
This will be a COVID safe comp. please review the rules for social distancing in boats. Face masks must be worn.
When you sign in you’ll be put into a weigh group, each group will have its own weigh in spot. This is to avoid large groups of people standing around one area. At this stage, weigh in will be at the top carpark, however this may change. We’re trying to maintain a good public perception, do your bit and follow the rules.
You must be an AUF member to enter and a club member to have your score contribute to the aggregate.

Hi All,

Southern Freedivers ran the Sorrento Boat Comp as the first competition of the 2020-2021 season yesterday. .At the start of the comp the water was reasonably calm in the bay where we all set off and were greeted with large surf on the ocean side of the mornington peninsula for those that decided to go straight out through the heads. One diver (Kim) had to turn around after losing both his guns off his ski within the first 5 minutes of the race, ending his competition and he ended up swimming around with some squid while looking for his spearguns. The swell was lower on the point lonsdale side of the ocean, but there was a westerly/south westerly wind causing a bit of chop. The bay was reasonably calm and the wind dropped in the afternoon to almost nothing towards the bottom of the bay. Was good to see Pete Riddle from Port Fairy and Dave Scholefield from SA come over to compete. Due to our covid safe plan we were unable to have a bbq, but were able to have the weigh-in while wearing masks and hear all about the problems Kim had with his jetski over the day.

The final scores are as follows.

Paul Blackborrow - 12 species - 1378.3 pts (non-member)
Brett Illingworth - 10 species - 1134.15 pts 100%
Marcus Dorfstatter - 10 fish - 1104.1 pts 97.35%
Dave Scholefield - 9 fish - 996.35 pts (non-member)
Peter Riddle - 8 fish - 896.35 pts 79.03%
Bob Manning - 7 fish - 777 pts 68.51%
Spencer Gubbins - 6 fish - 678.5 pts 59.82%
Stoj Pavlovski - 5 fish - 568.9 pts 50.16%
Josef Bednarek - 3 fish - 331.25 pts 29.21%

Notable fish weighed in were:
Flounder (345gm) Brett Illingworth
Six Spined Leather Jacket (1220gm) Brett Illingworth
Squid (1835gm) Brett Illingworth
Silver Drummer (1095gm) Paul Blackborrow
Trumpeter (1360gm) Paul Blackborrow

Well done to Paul Blackborrow for taking out the comp with 12 species!
Thanks to everyone that attended and look forward to seeing everyone at the next comp!
