Seen a fair few of them (Stargazers) off Indented Head but never wanted to shoot one, look ugly as but they seem quite meaty (fatty meat style like a blue throat)... I am one who tries everything but I will wait for someone to post some reviews on the stargazer before blazing away...

Three favourite (Spear and Eat)
1. Rock Flathead
2. Flounder
3. Leatherjacket

Three favourite (Rod and Eat)
1. Snapper (best on rod, 2nd for eating)
2. Flathead
3. Snotty Trevalla

Don't have a pic of a Tailor yet, this list is missing heaps of fish like Bream, Dollies, Garfish etc which will be added when we get pics. If I haven't written anything about eating qualities it's because I haven't eaten them and was waiting for someone to speak up! 8)

A wise man once told me..rod cod = poor mans lobster...anyone can confirm this?

You know when you get chinese takeout or go to an asian restaurant, that sweet and sour fried fish..is parrotfish/bluethroat. They sell for a fairly high price at the restaurants...

There is two ways I can take that in my head.

A) You are saying that for a poor man, red cod tastes like lobster for them because they are used to eating shit fish :)

B) Red cod tastes as good as lobster, but costs way less

In my opinion Red Cod tastes beautiful! My mate shot one last week and we cooked it up on the barbie with some lemon and herbs, it went down a treat. The flesh holds its shape, but flakes beautifully once cooked. Tastes great :)

In my opinion, although Red Mullet are supposed to taste really good I dont like them much. They have this weird distinctive taste to them that some people must like.

Plus I feel bad when I shoot them because they are so beautiful :)

P.S. Has anyone shot a Kingy in aa comp in Victoria?

Do you mean your mate shot a Scorpaena papillosus (which is what poor mans lobster refers to) or a Pseudophycis bachus?

Common names...

My first taste of the Southern sea carp...ahhhh how i remember that fateful day ever so clearly...

t'was a hot summer day in 06, the mercury hovered around 35C...location, number 16 beach...being only new to spearing, we misidentifed the dreaded southern sea carp for dusky morwong (dont ask how but we did).....unfortunately we pranged a number of these fish and proceeded to take them back to the holiday house for dinner...ignoring the tell tale signs of the rancid stink from the dead fish, we continued to gut and fillet....more stink.....and more reassurance that it was dusky morwong aka butterfish...

First batch - oven baked skin still intact...

Second batch - beer batter deep fried....

this fish tasted like absolute shit. far worse than shit..shit that came from a shit..believe me THE WORST EVER FISH YOU COULD EVER TRY TO EAT. NOTE "TRY"...for the love of God...i wouldnt even wish the taste of this fish onto anyone...mate a kilo of salt wouldnt even mask the taste...but thats not all.....

After consumption of southern sea carp..you'll keep smelling that "smell"...it'll stick to you...everything you eat after that reminds you of the "smell".... its a goddam curse!!!....you go to sleep - you smell it..you type away on your computer - you smell it!!!! its too painfull for me to continue...

just take my word for it...these fish are terrible to eat..never again....

peace
