hi
I am looking for good spots on the western side of the bay. I know Queenscliff, but it's a slack water dive, so it'd be good to know where else I can go.
Also - what are decent spots on the ocean side between Pt Longsdale and Anglesea? There should be something!
thanks!

You can get flathead off St Leopards, Portarlington etc. But Queenscliff isn't a slack water dive! Current can be your friend, but if its not, you can get out of it. If its ebbing, Cottage doesn't cop much current and if its flooding, around near the pilots pier is out of it.

That whole stretch form Point Lonsdale to Ocean Grove is pretty good. Point Impossible, and if you have a boat then there are some good spots of Torquay.

Thanks!
Will try to deal with the current next time. So many boats over there! I can imagine what it's like in summer...
So you basically saying that there's no decent spots on that side of the bay apart from Queenscliff?

Can you suggest couple of spots where exactly one can try spearfishing between Pt Lonsdale and Ocean Grove? It's a big area and a hard decision to make! :D

OK, but dont tell anyone! This was one of my favorites before I discoved boats. You know Fellows Road (it will be in the street directory)? Park at the end of that road, walk over the sand dunes and swim straight out 100-200m. Best done during summer, probably not much around out there at the moment (apart from salmon).

from kirks point around to point wilson you will get flathead , salmon, leather jackets , snapper , butter fish but in the summer months bronze whaler sharks can be a bit of trouble ( speaking from personal experience ).

Ive speared some massive flathead in the shallows around Kirks Point and big leather jackets around the rocky abalone infested area a bit north of the boat ramp..

My grandparents next door neighbour encountered two small bronzies on the eastern side of point lillias but ive never encountered anything dangerous... Were abouts exactly did you come across this bronzy?? And what sort of size are we talking? And was it more than once???

Im just interested around the mouth of Little River because I dont think its hit very hard because theres no access really..

where abouts you from w.o.t.?

first bronzie i saw was at long reef north of kirks , i was spearing some large pike at the time only in about 3 mtrs of water when it came cruising in just under the suface was about 6 foot it came within 6-8 mtrs of me then just left, Then i saw 2 small bronzies about 3-4 foot just south of ammo pier , they left rather quickly , about 6 weeks later in the same spot a large bronzie was jumping out of the water chasing gars. But the scariest was between point lillias and point wilson , diving in 8mtrs, just come up form a dive and was on the surface when something caught my eye , it was a BIG bronzie we both just stared at each other (me in fright) he came closer i could touch his pectral fin , l hit him with my spear and he moved off but not far and followed me about 50 mtrs to my boat and circled the boat for a while. he was as round as a 44 gallon drum and when he came past the boat he was nearly as long l would say easy 10 footer. by the way i am from geelong.

awesome storys wot, would you ever consider shooting the smaller bronzies with bigger gear?, id love to, but i reckon the big ones would scare the shit out of me, most of the people i have talked to that ecountered them said they usually just swim off, dont bother but a couple of people have had them follow them.

awesome stories w.o.t. must say would have absoloutly scared me to death... i was sitting in the boat once off Arthur the Great waiting for reds and something took my full pilly and sprinted, snapped me straight off and I remember telling my mate that was a serious shark, but I never thought that Bronzies hung around alot on the western side of the bay...

Im just waiting for the warm summer nights, with a load of burley and my shark rods.. I will have a shot..

What sort of fish did you see around Point Lillias way???

l have sat out there all night a few times with heaps of burley and the shark rods out and didn't get a touch but last November fishing for reds on the bend i caught a small one on my snapper gear. Us local boys should catch up when the weather improves! Point Lillias isn't that good just the usual butter fish flatties and leather jackets and if you are lucky some salmon. By the way i am looking at buying some new gear does anyone know where i can get some quality gear locally.
