2 weeks ago we meet about 8 spearos from the club at Portsea, all looking for a squid. AFAIK nobody get any... (but there were some reef fish).

They havent been behaving as normal this year. I dive mostly at Queenscliff and we could usually find them pretty easily and once we do, can go back to the same spots and kept getting them. Ive only caught 6 so far this year. Same as Portsea. They got a few early, but none recently.
Don’t know anything about Mornington/Mordialloc. Just keep an eye on fishing reports and look for boats drifting over seagrass. The type of grass they like is the stuff with a strong stalk with oval shaped leaves. If you find and area with freshly laid eggs it is likely there are squid about. The are very white when fresh and go a bit dirty looking after a while.

you say there not behaving normally... well that must ring true with the snapper season this year.. this time last year we were catching lots, and i havent had a run yet this season... every boat coming back to St Helens has been fishless, not even small flatheads are about at the moment in Corio Bay...

haha the day i post it i get success!!!

fished a spot i haven't tried for a long time, vis was the best i have ever ever had in the bay, was about 20 metres.

the fish i saw were

k g whiting
yellowfin bream
luderick
mullet
snapper
leatherjacket
garfish
red mullet

and squid

out of all of them i only managed

a bream at 33cm
leather jacket at 40cm
and a SQUID hahah saw a few schools could only manage to get one, missed about 5.

was a small one, anyone got tips on how to get close to them, i saw alot of them just always stayed away from me.

snapper look big, only saw them on the distance they pissed off qucik smart but there were about 10 in the school ranging from about 35 to 55cm

brilliant dive pity we couldn't capitilise with the amount of fish however it was still an awesome day on the water, who else agrees with me that your happier if its clear water, even if the fish a a bit skittish

You sure it was a yellow fin bream and not a black bream?

Well done shamousrouge... where abouts were you diving? Some parts of the bay viz was 1m, other spots 20m... its just a ballbreaker...

Well hopefully Sunday coming up, the viz should be good.. Looking to try for some early flatties around the spot for a dawn dive..

Go down. Stay down. Be still. Wait. Do not chase. They will come. Breath-hold is all important for cagey Squid. Above all, be patient. If you are not 100% certain of the shot then don't take it. Rest, recover, do it all again.
