Thinking of going for a short swim this afternoon to retrieve some squid jigs, done many a time when snorkeling port phillip but usually in summer, only have a 3/4 5mm thinkness spring suit that still fits (at least i got some natural insulation as well). checked water temps online and the about 14 degrees just wondering what would be a uber safe time to stay in the water at this temp, will only be swimin at a safe pace no deeper than 3 meters depth and distance likly to be less than 500 meters and have a spotter on the pier. From what I have read as long as i keep it under 30 mins should be no probs with body temp.

Just remember to obey the warning signs. When you begin to shiver uncontrollably you should already be on your way in. Have a warm jacket on stand by as well as 10 - 20 litres of warm to hot water in the car. Does wonders.

Oscar, you will have to go back to your Omer suit. ( when no-one is looking of course.)

A couple of things to take note of. If you don't have some, try and get some gloves, booties and a hood. Typically when diving your extremities get quite cold, If you are thinking you are on the verge of becoming hypothermic, the worst thing you can do once you jump out is to strip your suit off and towel yourself dry as quick as possible and turn the car heater on full. All this does is stimulate blood flow to wherever you rub, increasing the flow of cold blood back to your core. I generally do a very light dry off and chuck on a t shirt and jacket (leave wetsuit legs on) and wait to warm up (I am generally warmed up by the time I've packed up gear, cleaned any fish, etc.), then get changed.

Just a note, if you have been shivering violently and then stop shivering, get out of the water IMMEDIATELY, don't bother taking off your wetsuit, just rug up with anything and everything then get somewhere out of the wind. At this point you are in serious trouble as you start losing the ability to think rationally and even move effectively. Take it from someone who has been there after a 50min scuba dive in 16 degree water and a 2mm spring suit, not fun...
