A study released yesterday says that catastrophic carol bleaching will occur sooner than previously thought:

Quote:
Around 70 per cent of corals are expected to suffer from long-term degradation by 2030, even if strict emission cuts are enforced, according to the study.

Combined with the proposed new marine parks it would be worth getting up to the Coral Sea post haste eh?

In 1970, the GBR was to be decimated by the Crown of Thorns Starfish within 3 years. It's still there. If it's gunna go. it's gunna go and nothing will halt the process. And making the whole joint a park will do NOTHING bar making a few idealists ( or unrealists as I prefer) warm and fuzzy inside.

ps and if it's going to be bleached into oblivion they may as well let us continue fishing as there will be no fkn fish left anyway!!

Yeah, and global cooling was the big threat in the 1970's. There was all sorts of "evidence" we where entering the next Ice Age. Now there's all sorts of "evidence" for global warming.

This is from wikipedia
Global cooling was a conjecture during the 1970s of imminent cooling of the Earth's surface and atmosphere along with a posited commencement of glaciation. This hypothesis had little support in the scientific community, but gained temporary popular attention due to a combination of a slight downward trend of temperatures from the 1940s to the early 1970s and press reports that did not accurately reflect the scientific understanding of ice age cycles. In contrast to the global cooling conjecture, the current scientific opinion on climate change is that the Earth has not durably cooled, but undergone global warming throughout the twentieth century.
