I was thinking about the first fish I speared and how
Happy I was to show my parents.

My first fish was a dusky in the shallows at st leonards.

What was yours?

shot my first at fishermans' beach in mornington 2 weeks ago - a humble squid about 15cm hood. a reasonable entree and guaranteed spear addiction for life.

now i want more bigger stuff all the time

Would have been 11 years ago but i believe it was a flatty on the old trusty sling! Was 14 at the time and diving my favourite spot now turned marine park :x ... Ricketts Point

30 years ago when I was 15 I shot 3 sweep in a ledged cave with surge in a rock pool that opened out to the swell at the rocks to the right at Gunamatta. Me and my mate were snorkling and a man with a small undersea gun was telling us about the fish he'd seen but couldn't dive well enough to get one so he gave me a go with his gun and I nailed 3, gave him 2 and kept one. Next day me and my mate went to Army Disposals and purchased our first guns - little undersea models with screw on prangers. Now all those gutters at Gunamatta are filled with sand.

A big dusky at Mt Martha in about 78-79. I wasn't strong enough back then to load the rubbers and had to get my old man to do it for me. It was one of my proudest moments at the time. My mum has a photo of me and the fish is half my size.

My first was also from St Leonards just under the old boat ramp..

It was classic! I was climbing around under the pier looking for fish with my net as you do!! I still remember it was great vis and I saw this massive flounder under the pier (it was massive back then). I piss bolted across the road to my grandparents house to tell her and ask her how to get it (she had an answer for everything). She went out to the Shed and sharpened a long piece of wood about broomstick length, she was handy with the woodwork and said go and spear it!! I sprinted back with my spear in hand, thankfully the flounder was sitting just where I left him, I layed down under the pier on the beam lined him up.
And that was that I also remember how happy I was!!

Ran back with the flounder flapping around.. Good memory's.

i think it was either a moonlighter or a female bluethroat @ queenscliff between the two piers. it was probs about late 2007. great memories

Makes me happy thinking of the time I started snorkeling In 2 foot of water
(too scared of going deeper) to today keen as to get out in the deep blue and
Chase fish bigger than me!

And I havnt been doing it all that long!!
Here's to more great memory's and wonderful sightings!!

Flathead off old Mcray life saving club in ( I hate to say it ) 1968 with Broom handle and a barb fitted. Yes and with snorkel with the s bend and ping pong ball.

my first was a dirty red-headed hooker i picked up on a corner in St Kilda. Her bush was enormous and firey red also. It was the 80's. $45 got the lot back in those days - including a nasty rash i've still got on my ball sack. Ahh the memories.
