OK fellas this may or may not work but I am looking at organising a few bits and pieces for the crew I met in Fiji.
If any-one is like me they have a stash of stuff that they keep as spares, but which more or less never see the salt water.
Old masks and snorkels, shitty flippers, and rubber for guns and handspears. Even odd bits of dyneema for bridles.
As an example, before I left to go to Fiji I changed my rubbers. The old ones were maybe 30% worn and were bound to sit in my spare dive box for a few months before being thrown out. They are the sorts of things I'm after. If you ordered a length of bulk rubber and have a leftover piece not long enough for your gun, I'll take it.
I want to send the gear to be distributed throughout the village of Yanuya.
I've got two masks, a snorkel and a few meters of rubber, plus a bit of fishing line ready to go. What do you blokes reckon?
Any-one looking to donate stuff can bring it to the next Southern Freedivers meeting. or t he one after, and hand it over to Gigantor or South. If you can't do this and want to help send me pm and I'll arrange to collect goodies or pay for postage to my place.
Oh yeah, if any-one is looking for some cheap second-hand gear I'll be holding an auction in a couple of months......
Seriously, they do it tough. It's third world. The islanders have to work and/or sell fish to send their kids to boarding school on the mainland if they want them to get a high school education. Many resort workers do long hours and get two or three days off a fortnight.
As for other services like health care, well in lots of places there's bugger all. Shops, a pharmacy and all that stuff is maybe a few hours boat ride away and fuel is expensive. New gear rare and pricey and lot of guys dive for their income.
Cheers Hodad
